How could one man possibly pay for the entirety of our sins on the cross? The sin and evil of the world, while unfathomably large, is ultimately finite. There is a limit to it. On the other hand, Christ’s love, goodness, power, and holiness are also unfathomably great, but they have no limit. They are infinite. The finite amount of human sin and evil was no match for the infinite love, goodness, power, and holiness of Christ. This means that Christ’s atoning work on the cross was the greatest overkill the universe has ever seen.
