Part of the counter-cultural, counter-Enlightenment nature of Christianity is that the worldview posits the idea that it’s not about us. The Bible puts forward the idea that we are part of a story far bigger than we could ever imagine and we’re nowhere near the center of its focus. We are not on the throne of history or even of our very lives. The One on the throne doesn’t go by names like “Me”, “Myself”, or “I”. Instead, the One enthroned and ruling over our lives and all of history goes by names like King of kings and Lord of lords, Faithful and True. All of history and creation points to Him. At first it can seem like this devalues us, but the irony is that the very opposite is true. By not being the center of the universe, our value skyrockets because the One who is at the center and who’s infinitely greater than you and I made us in His image. He gave up His life to save us. We’re infinitely more valuable because He’s on the throne than if we were the ones ruling and reigning. Your king’s name isn’t “Me”, “Myself”, or “I”. It’s Jesus.
